![]() ![]() I loved the way Quindlen explored the dynamic between parents and their adult children, and what happens when their respective roles change-it was like probing an achy tooth with your tongue. ![]() The ones between people who aren't necessarily very likable are more interesting. 13, 1994 If literature were judged solely by its ability to elicit strong emotions, columnist-cum-novelist Quindlen (Object Lessons, 1991) would win another Pulitzer for this wrenching, albeit flawed fiction. I think that actually made it a more effective story it's easy to read about relationships between likable people. ONE TRUE THING by Anna Quindlen RELEASE DATE: Sept. I didn't like the characters much, except for the mother and one of the brothers (although I had a hard time telling the brothers apart maybe that was the point). ![]() My family couldn't pry my Nook away from me. Write for Your Life by Anna Quindlen: 9780593229835 : Books NATIONAL BESTSELLER In this clarion call to pick up a pen and find yourself from one of our most astute chroniclers of modern life. ![]() It reminded me of the women's fiction I used to like to read in the 80s and 90s, about the time this book was published-the kind of thing my book group used to read. I'm not even really sure where the recommendation to read it came from this time I think it showed up in the "new ebooks" section on my library's website a couple of months ago and I slapped a request on it without really thinking, so when I got the notice that it was available I went ahead and checked it out. I've never really wanted to read this book, mainly because I thought the trailer for the movie looked so incredibly stupid. ![]()

![]() ![]() Instead of the cliched farm boy, Will has had to fend for himself on the streets of London after the death of his mother and has wound up as a dockworker. In keeping with a darker, more mature tone, he has been aged up from eleven to seventeen. Ignorant of his heritage, he meets with the last remnant of those forces of Light who reveal to him the true magic of the world.īut that is largely where the similarities end. At first glance, he seems very similar to Cooper's version: of humble background, he's the sole descendant of the forces of Light that at great cost (mostly) defeated the Dark in an age long passed. Some clever changes have been made to introduce some shades of grey and also to appeal to a more modern audience. ![]() However, while Pacat very clearly intends Dark Rise as a homage, this is also not an uncomplicated tale of Light vs Dark. The title itself harks back to The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, and the story plays with many of the same elements. If this sounds familiar to you, it's not surprising Dark Rise is a book that proudly shows its influences. ![]() When he is finally captured, he discovers a magical dimension to the world he never knew: a world which, as the last of his bloodline, he may be destined to save from the return of the Dark King. ![]() Dark Rise brings some shades of grey to a classic tale of Light vs Dark.Ĭover art by Magdalena Pagowska, 1821 London, a teenage boy called Will is on the run from the nobleman who killed his mother. ![]() ![]() ![]()
